Newsom Chooses New Chief |
Lead | |
|
I just heard on ABC 7 that Newsom has chosen a new police chief though the name has not yet been released. Has anyone heard anything?

FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco city leaders claim they are stunned by massive budget cuts to safety agencies that were announced in a televised committee
meeting Wednesday. Hundreds of police and firefighter jobs could be on the line, if the cuts are approved. Newson makes Chief pick but won't announce
because of the cuts...

One gets the feeling Newsom isn't bringing anyone into the SFPD to make it a lean, mean, crime-fighting machine.
One wonders if his perfect budget provides additional desks for cops to sit behind? |

Gascon is Hispanic - he immigrated to the United States from Cuba as a boy - and is an advocate for sanctuary policies for illegal immigrants, http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/16/MN29188GUH.DTL&tsp=1 |

Sanctuary, But ... | ||

The new police chief supports sanctuary, but does support withholding the names of suspected felons from the feds. This position distinguishes him from the
city's former policy, which is still supported by David Campos.

Maybe Gav can give Gas some hair styling tips.
That murder clearance rate he got in Mesa is very impressive. Hopefully Gascon can convince our homicide detectives that people really don't stab themselves to death as often as they think. |

Probably the same kind of sanctuary policy that Giuliani had in NY, which was for the police to not concern themselves with the status of eyewitnesses.

This is surprising. It looks like Newsom actually made a good and fairly gutsy choice. Big city experience, Compstat department experience, diversity
experience, but not a softy. Had the balls to fuck with Joe Arpaio, who is a real Nazi fuck. (go to Pheonix, hang out round the jail sometime, you'll see
Arpaio's political slogans all over the paddy wagons - Arpaio is a crook and a demagogue, just ask New Times...)

I agree, sounds like a good pick. I winced when I read that Newsom had been meeting with him before the Police Commission recommendation of three names -
seemed a little smelly.
However, I believe that the Police Commission worked hard and with integrity on winnowing down and selecting strong candidates to meet the needs of the department and city. |
