R.I.P., indeed.
A man of integrity in politics: I feel lucky to have known him, even though it was only through here. I hope he's at peace now. |

He Gave His All | ||

Disagreement doesn't entitle one to be overtly disrespectful. Jim conducted himself that way on the Wall. I'm going to aim for that.
God Bless! |

I want to thank Able for enabling me to have a couple off board emails with Jim. I got to say to him things that I wanted him to know and he was very grateful.
Jim was truly what San Francisco used to be all about. I mean that. Class amidst the chaos of politics. Like Joe Alioto was. Jim Rivaldo was also something else. Beneath the turbulence of the conduct of politics and political campaigns, if the true anchor is a principal, the person has real dignity and grace. One can even disagree with political views and movements and objectives. But those who are acting on their sincere principal can still be admired for the fact that they are doing that. He was what so many today are not. A man acting on principals not politics. A great actor once said: "I dont want to be a movie star. I want to be in movies that are stars". God bless you Jim. |

I saw Jim's name in the Examiner this morning, at the top of the page among 'newsmakers', and for a moment I thought it a bit out of context, being so familiar seeing and talking with him here. Then I realized the meaning.
I cherish you for being of the 'other side' but being able to bring humor, wit, and a sense that we're all family to these discussions. It seemed that no matter the topic, there was never anything that was truly and inextricably divisive. You've shown me that not everyone has to be disagreeable to disagree, and he even agreed with you in an effort to get you to examine your own possitions. Thanks for being a classy San Francisco character. -P |

As a new San Franciscan I always looked forward to reading his post as I took them as a history lesson of The City. I never met him but I will miss his experience and wisdom. Now almost all of San Francisco's giants are in tha great City Hall in the sky. God Bless Jim Rivaldo.

A Lasting Legacy | ||
|
I happened to run into a friend earlier today who told me the sad news of Jim's death yesterday. Although saddened to hear of his death, I was relieved to know that Jim had good care and that he had a good attitude until the very end.
His accomplishments cover decades. He has earned for himself an honored and lasting place in the memory of the city and the gay community. |

Quote: My understanding is that he worked right up until the very end and his post on this board, inlcuding a spirited argument on one of my diaries, demonstrates that his illness had no effect on his passion. The more I read about him, the more I believe that his contribution to the gay political commnuity in the country was greater than even Harvey Milk's. |

Re: the Sentinal piece | ||
|
I want to thank Chryssipus for posting the Requiem to Jim Rivaldo from the Sentinal.
Most interesting, I dont know why these things are happening to me lately (more on this below) but in the text of the Sentinal piece was the fact that Jim was apparently responsible for the creation of the Log Cabin Republicans. AHA! A closet Republican!! And to think he never said a thing about that. Egad what poetic tides ripple throught he river of that mans life. A toast to Jim for that this sunday. Anyway I love certain pieces and Mozarts Requiem is one as is the one Bethoven wrote as well. ....anyway....after it finishes playing in the YouTube format a number of other related pieces come up in little boxes at the bottom. When I listened to Requiem it caused me to think about that scene from my favorite movie of all time Amadeus and the scene from it that showed Mozart dictating the piece to Salieri as he died. The perfect metaphor of Jim concocting poltical strategy even as he knew he was going to leave us and his work. Thank you Chryssipus. |

Quote: I'm sure that many members of the gay community would vote Republican based on taxes, size of government, etc. But as long as a certain faction controls the national party, they are going to stay away, or stay under very deep cover. Jim Rivaldo had far more courage than appantly Larry "Wide Stance" Craig did. |

actually this post appears to be his last on the wall (though he did a later one on Junto):
Quote: Quite appropriate in my opinion. I loved his sense of humour. |

That was his last post here at The Wall, too.

It should be clarified, I think, that Jim was a registered Democrat, but was respectful of other opinions and affiliations...

www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/ar...=printable The Chron obit appropriately mentions Dick Pabich, Jim's former business partner in consulting, who also died from complications from AIDS some years ago. |

I always remember Jim recounting how his Italian mother learned to make lasagna from her Jewish neighbor and how he got a kick out of that juxtaposition.
While I still think his work in electing idiot Sophie Maxwell hurt the city, there is no doubt his contributions far outweigh that mistake. Que en paz descanse y que para el le brille la luz perpetua. Asi sea. |
